Coolidge’s Carlo Hernandez, who led the Bears to 3A state titles in 2005 and 2006, returned to the school last season after leaving to Vista Grande and Show Low. In full rebuild mode, Coolidge went 0-10 in his first season back last year, but he still has a 92-29 record accumulated there in 10 years. He guided the Bears to six state championship appearances overall.
Hernandez is tied to the Southern Arizona scene this year because of Coolidge’s alignment in the 3A East with Sabino, Pusch Ridge, Safford and Thatcher, in addition to San Tan Foothills and Florence.
Sabino alum Ryan McBrayer, who led the Sabercats to the 2023 3A title, is the coach with the most wins at his current school within the Tucson city limits at 60 through eight years.
Corey Noble, who also completed his eighth year last season at Walden Grove, is next at 55 wins.
Then comes Desert View’s Robert Bonillas (51 wins) and St. David’s Braden Davis (50).
Pusch Ridge’s Kent Middleton and Buena’s Joe Thomas are only three wins away from reaching 50 wins at their respective school.
