Sunnyside beat Oregon 6-3 on Wednesday to advance to the second round of the Junior League West Region taking place in Bend, Oregon. The team from Mission Manor Park will now play Alaska Thursday at 2 p.m. in the double-elimination tournament that ends on July 31.
Sunnyside went up 1-0 on a sacrifice fly from Ozzie Guadarrama, scoring Jake Galvez in the bottom of the first inning. Oregon tied it up 1-1 in the top of the second but David Blasi scored on an error in the bottom half of the inning to go back up 2-1. Oregon made things even at 2-2 in the fourth but Emilio Medina knocked in Galvez and Hector Degollado in the bottom of the inning to put Sunnyside up for good at 4-2.
Rodolfo Carbajal tripled in Humberto Rodriguez to make it 5-2 after five, Oregon scored again in the top of the sixth but Galvez scored on another error in the bottom of the sixth for the 6-3 final. Andres Valenzuela (1), Guadarrama (1.1) and Carbajal (4.2) took the mound for Sunnyside and Carbajal collected five strikeouts. Guadarrama recorded the victory. Medina went 2-3 with two RBIs.
In other action Nogales lost to Hawaii in the semifinal round of the Intermediate Baseball West Region taking place in Nogales and Thornydale will play the winner of Northern California and Southern California Friday night for the Little League West Region Softball Championship.
