Sunnyside’s golf program hosted last week the First Annual Sunnyside Unified School District/TGP Golf Clinic, which featured golf professionals Landyn Lewis and Justin Bubser of the Tucson Golf Program visiting the Sunnyside Golf Complex to offer instruction to Desert View and Sunnyside golfers to begin the 2025 season.

Lewis is the founder of TGP and Bubser joined him after a stint as the Arizona women’s golf assistant coach. They are among the top golf instructors for junior golfers in the southwest.

Fifteen golfers representing the Sunnyside and Desert View boys and girls teams worked with the pros on short-game skills; putting, chipping, and pitching.

“A lot of learning took place and a lot of fun was had by all,” Sunnyside boys golf coach Orlando Rodriquez mentioned. “Athletic trainer Hannah Running made sure we had plenty of water and cold towels on this hot afternoon. Thank you to the district’s fields crew who have the golf facility looking pristine.

“Thank you to (Sunnyside girls) coach (Pete) Palomarez, (and Desert View coaches John) Romero and (Art) Carrera for bringing their athletes and supporting the growth of golf in our schools. Thanks to the security team for coming out and checking out the action. Finally, thank you to the golfers. Our district has lots of untapped potential and a very bright future ahead in the game of golf. More important than that, they are outstanding people, amongst the best our district has to offer.”

Rodriquez added that he looks forward to continuing the working relationship between the Sunnyside Unified School District and TGP and plans on more events in the future.
