As the 2025 regular season winds down, every win matters on the road to the playoffs. No one understands that more than Salpointe head coach Pat Ryden.

“We’ve struggled pretty much all year offensively, and we’ve just got to get back to work tomorrow,” Ryden said after the No. 11 Lancers’ 21-7 loss at home Friday to 6A Southern foe Gilbert Perry.

The first half of the game was a defensive battle.

While both teams had chances to score, the Lancers and No. 16 Pumas defenses locked down, causing turnovers stopping any offensive momentum.

“I was super proud of our guys defensively; (they) kept us in the game the whole game,” Ryden said about his defense.

The only score in the first half came at the end of the first quarter when Perry grabbed a pick-6 to lead 7-0 at halftime.

At the 8:03 mark in the third quarter, Perry scored the first offensive touchdown when quarterback Kael Snyder handed the ball off to running back Talen Frazier who ran around the edge for the score.

Snyder, who had offers from Washington, Arizona State, Utah, Mississippi State and others, announced his commitment to Boise State on Oct. 19, becoming the first 2027 quarterback commit for the Broncos.

With 4:25 left in the third quarter, Salpointe (5-4 overall, 1-3 6A Southern) got on the board when running back Chris Chaney jumped over the pile at the goal line and landed in the end zone.

The Lancers used three different quarterbacks, Matthew Avelar, Rayce Alvarez and Adrian Rodriguez during the game.

Perry (5-4, 2-1) took a 21-7 lead on a quarterback keeper from Snyder with 2:20 left in the third quarter.

Salpointe had chances to cut into the Perry lead in the fourth quarter but turnovers and penalties stalled the Lancers’ offensive drives.

“We had a chance to score right there and we’re running our mouth and getting 15-yard penalties and those are the things we can’t do against good teams,” Ryden said. “We can’t do that period. It’s a little frustrating because that’s not who we are, so we’ve got to get back to work tomorrow.”

Salpointe’s Alvarez was sacked on fourth down with 1:16 to go in the game, sealing the win for Perry.

The Lancers hit the road to Phoenix on Friday to finish the regular season against No. 6 Pinnacle.
