Amphitheater High School senior guard Monica Verrett eclipsed 1,000 points in her career on Thursday night, when the Panthers defeated visiting Cholla 68-2.

Verrett had 17 points to give her 1,002 points in her career. She also had five assists and six steals. She is averaging 11.9 points and 4.5 steals per game.

The ultra-quick Verrett, who is a standout sprinter in track and field, is eight steals shy of reaching 500 in her career.

Her 492 steals are a school record and rank fifth in Southern Arizona annals.

A brother-sister rarity: Amphi coach Domineik Banks and his sister Monica Verrett, a senior captain on his team who eclipsed 1,000 career points Thursday, hold school records in steals for their respective teams — Banks owns the boys steals record in a season with 153 in 2010-11 with the Panthers and Verrett is the girls career steals record-holder with 492 (Banks photo)

Verrett is the sister of first-year Amphi coach Domineik Banks, who was known for his defensive excellence with Amphi from 2008-11.

His 153 steals in the 2010-11 season is a school record and the third-most in Southern Arizona history, trailing only Pueblo’s Randall Moore (state-record 276 in 1975-76) and Lafayette Lever (161 in 1976-77).

Amphi (9-12, 2-1 4A Gila) will next host Sahuarita on Wednesday.

The Chargers (0-12, 0-3) will host Douglas on Monday.
