The Pima Community College women’s basketball team avenged an earlier loss to No. 11 Mesa on Saturday while sophomore forward Kiley Sours-Miller eclipsed 1,000 career points in the game at Mesa.

The Aztecs (18-4, 10-2 in ACCAC) took over first place in the ACCAC Division II standings with the 76-69 victory over the Thunderbirds (15-5, 9-2).

The victory avenges Pima’s 71-60 loss at home against Mesa on Jan. 7.

It is Pima’s sixth straight win and ninth victory in its last 10 games.

The Thunderbirds hit a 3-pointer to take a 52-50 advantage in the first minute of the fourth quarter, but the Aztecs responded with a 15-1 run capped off by sophomore Sours-Miller’s basket to make it 65-53 with 4:51 left.

The Thunderbirds countered with a 13-3 run to cut Pima’s lead to 68-66, but Sours-Miller halted the momentum with a basket inside to make it 70-66 with 1:23 remaining.

After a missed 3-pointer, freshman Kahlia Gonzales grabbed a crucial defensive rebound. Freshman Nevaeh Urenda (Flowing Wells) missed a 3-pointer, but sophomore Melicia Nelson snagged the offensive board and scored to make it 72-66 with 44 seconds left.

Nelson and Urenda converted on their free throws to help close out the game.

Sours-Miller was at 990 points at the start of the game. She surpassed 1,000 points with 2:21 left in the second quarter with a layup to make it 29-24. She finished the game with her ninth double-double of the season with 25 points (1,015 points) and 10 rebounds.

Nelson had a triple-double of 16 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists to go with five steals and one block.

Freshman Reigne Waugh and sophomore Lucy Land each scored 10 points while Gonzales went 3 for 5 from beyond the arc for nine points along with three rebounds and four assists.
