
The No. 4 Pima Community College men’s basketball team improved to 27-0 overall and 15-0 in ACCAC with its 74-57 win over Chandler-Gilbert at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.
Pima are 3-0 against the Coyotes (13-14, 4-11) this season, winning by an average margin of 19 points.
The Aztecs started the game outscoring the Coyotes 14-3, but Chandler-Gilbert rallied to keep the score close for much of the half.
Up 22-18 with 4:23 left in the half, the Aztecs went on a 9-0 run to make it 31-18 with 1:02 left. They held a 32-20 lead at the break.
The Coyotes cut Pima’s lead to 45-36 with 12:54 remaining, but freshman Rowan McKenzie hit a 3-pointer to halt the momentum.
The Aztecs took their biggest lead of the game when McKenzie drained another 3-pointer to make it 59-42 with 8:10 remaining. Pima would match the 17-point lead on two more occasions to close it out.
Freshman Isaiah Hill (Premier Prep Academy and formerly of Pueblo) finished with a game-high 16 points to go with nine assists and two steals.
McKenzie went 3 for 6 from beyond the arc and finished with 11 points along with five rebounds.
Sophomores Brock Mendoza and Isaac Johnson each scored 10 points. Mendoza had nine boards and four blocks while Johnson added five rebounds and two assists.
Sophomore Mason Tippett (Cienega) contributed with nine points, six rebounds and two blocks off the bench. He went 4 for 6 from the field.
The Aztecs will play at South Mountain in Phoenix in an ACCAC game on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
WOMEN’S HOOPS
The Pima women’s team (21-4, 13-2 in ACCAC) earned its ninth straight win as it hosted Chandler-Gilbert Community College (15-12, 6-9) at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.
The No. 11 Aztecs used a pair of double digit runs in the second half to beat the Coyotes 94-63. The Aztecs went 3-0 against the Coyotes in the regular season.
Up 58-51, the Aztecs closed out the third quarter with a 12-2 run to take a 70-53 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
The Aztecs maintained their double-digit lead. Leading 77-59 with 5:18 remaining, they scored 14 straight points in the next four minutes to make it 91-59.
Freshman Lucy Fisher scored a season-high 27 points to go with 11 rebounds. She shot 12 for 16 from the field and added two assists.
Sophomore Kiley Sours-Miller secured her 10th double-double of the season as she finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She added three blocks, one steal and one assist.
Freshman Reigne Waugh also scored in double figures with 14 points. She fell short of a double-double with nine rebounds and had two assists.
Sophomore Melicia Nelson fell short of a triple-double as she added nine points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Freshman Kahlia Gonzales posted seven points, six assists and two steals.
Sophomores Cassie Coolidge (Sahuaro) and Ahdiayh Chee each went 2 for 3 from beyond the arc with six points.
The Aztecs shot 52 percent (39 for 75) from the field, 42.1 percent (8 for 19) from 3-point range and 72.7 percent (8 for 11) from the free throw line. They outrebounded the Coyotes 58-20.
The Aztecs will be back on the road this coming Wednesday for an ACCAC matchup against South Mountain in Phoenix. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
BASEBALL
The baseball team (10-5, 3-3 in ACCAC) played its first road games of the 2026 season on Saturday against Chandler-Gilbert Community College (10-6, 4-2) and lost both games of the doubleheader.
The No. 21 Aztecs’ offense struggled in the first game and the Aztecs were unable to maintain their lead in the second game.
Game 1: Chandler-Gilbert 10, (21) Pima 0 (6 innings)
The Aztecs managed one hit for the game as the Coyotes retired the final 15 Pima batters to close the game.
Freshman Damian Lorta (Desert View) drew a walk in the first inning and sophomore Jackson Glueck hit a leadoff single in the second inning, which proved to be all of Pima’s offense.
Freshman Hayden Green (Sabino) took the loss as he pitched four innings, giving up four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts on 76 pitches.
Game 2: Chandler-Gilbert 11, (21) Pima 7
The Aztecs took a 7-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Coyotes rallied off nine runs to take the lead for good.
The Aztecs scored three runs in the first inning. Freshman Adriel Figueroa-Brito scored on a fielder’s choice to put Pima on the board. Glueck hit a groundout that scored Lorta and sophomore Mike Jones (Canyon del Oro) drove an RBI single that brought in freshman Cooper Kruk (Catalina Foothills).
Jones hit his second RBI single of the game in the fifth inning bringing in Lorta, who led off with a double to give the Aztecs a 4-2 advantage.
Pima tacked on another three runs in the seventh inning. Jones and freshman Aciel Guillen (Salpointe Catholic) hit back-to-back RBI singles and sophomore Quintin Hennesy capped off the inning with an RBI triple to make it 7-2.
The Aztecs left two runners stranded to close out the game.
Jones finished the game 4 for 5 with three RBIs and a run scored while Guillen and Glueck each finished 1 for 5 with an RBI and a run. Hennesy was 1 for 4 with an RBI. Figueroa-Brito went 2 for 4 with a run and Lorta was 1-for-5 with two runs.
Sophomore Cam Grenert pitched in relief and took the loss as he went 1/3 of an inning, giving up five runs (two earned) on two hits with one walk.
The Aztecs will be back on the road Tuesday when they play GateWay Community College in Mess for an ACCAC doubleheader. First game is at noon.
SOFTBALL
The Pima softball team (12-1, 7-1 in ACCAC) suffered its first blemish of the 2026 season at South Mountain (5-6, 4-4) in Phoenix.
The No. 6 Aztecs scored 21 runs in the first game but were held to two runs and three hits in the second game.
Freshman Alyssa Aguirre (Sabino) closed out the day going 5 for 6 with three RBIs and four runs while fellow freshman Angelina Dehler (Empire) finished 3 for 6 with two RBIs and three runs. Freshman Adriana Machado (Canyon del Oro) picked up the win in the first game and sophomore Sariah Ferrentino (Sabino) took the loss in the second game.
Game 1: (6) Pima 21, South Mountain 10 (5 innings)
There were four lead changes in the first two innings, and the Aztecs took the lead for good with 14 runs scored in the fourth inning.
The Aztecs trailed 7-5 heading into the fourth inning. Sophomore Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View) hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Aguirre to cut into the deficit. Sophomore Julissa Lopez (Tucson) put the Aztecs up for good when she hit a three-run homer to left field to score freshman Isabel Rodriguez (Walden Grove) and sophomore Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside) to put Pima ahead 9-7.
Lopez, freshman Isabel Mendoza (Cienega), freshman Kayla Hendrix (Canyon del Oro), Aguirre, Rodriguez, Figueroa and Dehler all had RBI hits and runs scored in the inning. The Aztecs led 21-7 after the inning was over.
Figueroa also had a two-run RBI double in the second inning as she finished 2 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs. Lopez added an RBI single as part of the fourth inning and went 3 for 5 with four RBIs and two runs. Aguirre was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and four runs. Mendoza went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs while Rodriguez finished 3 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs. Freshman Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside) went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs. Hendrix finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs. Dehler went 2 for 5 with an RBI and two runs.
Machado picked up the win in a relief appearance as she threw 3 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks on 72 pitches.
Game 2: South Mountain 10, (6) Pima 2 (5 innings)
The Cougars snapped Pima’s 12-game winning streak after a fast start scoring six runs in the first inning.
The Aztecs got all their hits in the first two innings.
Dehler hit an RBI single to drive in Lopez-Bedoy, who was hit-by-a-pitch to start the inning. With two outs, Aguirre hit an RBI single to bring in Dehler to cut the Cougars’ lead to 6-2. The Cougars scored four unanswered runs to earn the run-rule win.
The Aztecs loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth inning but Rodriguez struck out to end the threat.
Aguirre was 2 for 2 with an RBI while Dehler finished with an RBI single and a run.
Ferrentino took the loss in the circle as she pitched four innings, giving up 10 runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and two walks on 90 pitches.
The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday for an ACCAC doubleheader against Scottsdale. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
TRACK AND FIELD
The Pima men’s and women’s track & field teams competed at the Don Kirby Elite Indoor Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center hosted by the University of New Mexico.
Sophomore Cedric Cade set two new NJCAA national qualifying marks. He cleared a high jump of 2.03 meters (6-feet, 8-inches). He also earned a qualifier in the Long Jump with a mark of 7.15 meters (23-5.5).
Freshman Danny Knapp (Rio Rico) also earned two national qualifying times in the 600 meters (1:22.52) and the 800 meters (1:56.52).
Freshman Noah Brosier set a new national qualifying mark in the long jump at 7.27 meters (23-10.25).
Sophomore Jackson Koontz (Salpointe Catholic) earned his national qualifying mark on the day in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 8:45.53.
Freshman Noah Macias (Mica Mountain) improved on his 600 meters time at 1:19.74. He improved from a 1:20.19 set at the PVCC Indoor Invitational on Jan. 24. He remains at No. 2 in Pima school history for the event behind Orion Barger (1:18.10).
In the women’s competition, freshman Tyra Starkey improved on her pole vault mark. She finished with a vault of 3.10 meters (10-2) and improved from her previous mark of 3.05 meters (10-0).
The Aztecs will compete in their final regular season indoor meet on Friday at the NAU Tune-Up in Flagstaff.
