
The Pima Community College baseball team split an ACCAC doubleheader at Scottsdale on Saturday.
The No. 21 Aztecs (13-6, 6-4 in ACCAC) had a difficult time manufacturing runs in the first game but scored 16 runs in the second game to get the split against Scottsdale (9-11, 4-6).
Freshman Adriel Figueroa-Brito went 3 for 8 with five RBIs and three runs in the two games. Freshman Cooper Kruk (Catalina Foothills) was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs while sophomore Jackson Glueck finished 3 for 7 with an RBI and two runs. Freshman Hayden Green (Sabino) took the loss in the first game while sophomore Brady Hall got the win in the second game, pitching in relief.
Game 1: Scottsdale 5, (21) Pima 2
The rally was cut short in the seventh inning as the Aztecs left the bases loaded with a strikeout ended the threat.
Figueroa-Brito hit a lead-off single in the fifth inning. He stole second base and reached third base on an error. He scored on freshman Ezra Vidal’s (Sahuarita) sacrifice fly. The Aztecs ended the fifth inning with the bases loaded.
The Aztecs had bases loaded in the seventh inning with two outs. Kruk drew a walk to score Glueck but a strikeout ended the game.
The Aztecs managed two hits and five walks in the first four innings.
Glueck was 1 for 2 with a run and two walks. Figueroa-Brito was 1 for 3 with a run.
Green took the loss as he pitched four innings, giving up three runs on five hits with six strikeouts and four walks on 91 pitches.
Game 2: (21) Pima 16, Scottsdale 8 (7 innings)
The Aztecs went on an offensive barrage as they took the lead for good with seven runs in the fifth inning.
The Aztecs trailed 6-4 in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Glueck hit a double to reach base. Freshman Westin Thompson followed with a two-run home run to tie it at 6-6.
The Aztecs loaded the bases in the same inning as sophomore Leon Cereceres drew a walk to score sophomore Quintin Hennesy and put the Aztecs ahead. Figueroa-Brito followed with a grand slam to left field scoring sophomore Max Leyva (Tucson), sophomore Ramon Martinez and Cereceres putting Pima up 11-6.
Cereceres hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to score Hennesy and Leyva, and Figueroa-Brito drove an RBI single to plate Martinez. The Aztecs were up 14-7 at that point.
Hennesy and Leyva had back-to-back RBI hits in the seventh inning to help put the game away.
Figueroa-Brito finished the game going 2 for 5 with five RBIs, two runs and a walk. Kruk hit a two-run single in the first inning as he went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs. Leyva fell a home run short of the cycle as he was 3 for 4 with an RBI and three runs. Thompson finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs while Hennesy was 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs. Glueck went 2 for 5 with an RBI and run and Martinez was 1 for 2 with an RBI and two runs.
Hall picked up the win in relief as he pitched five innings, giving up three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk on 76 pitches.
The Aztecs return to the West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday for an ACCAC doubleheader with Phoenix College. The first game starts at 12:00 p.m.
