No. 25 Pima splits baseball doubleheader with Paradise Valley

The Pima Community College baseball team split an ACCAC doubleheader at Paradise Valley on Saturday in an ACCAC.

The No. 25 Aztecs (18-13, 11-9 in ACCAC) won the first game 9-5 but lost the second 8-7 against the Pumas (12-21, 7-13) .

Sophomore Ramon Martinez was 4 for 7 in the gameds with three RBIs and a run. Freshman Adriel Figueroa-Brito finished 2 for 7 with an RBI and three runs. Sophomore Cam Grenert picked up the win in a relief appearance while sophomore Brady Hall took the loss in his relief outing

Game 1: (25) Pima 9, Paradise Valley 5

The Aztecs rallied from two deficits and scored five runs in the fifth inning to help secure the win in the first game.

Down 3-0 after the first inning, the Aztecs tied the game with three runs in the third inning. The Pumas retook the lead in the fourth inning to go up 4-3 but the Aztecs scored five runs to take the lead for good.

Freshman Damian Lorta (Desert View) hit a home run and finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run.

Freshman Ezra Vidal (Sahuarita) and Figueroa-Brito each had an RBI and two runs. Martinez was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run.

Grenert picked up the win as he pitched 3 1/3 innings, giving up one run on two hits with three strikeouts on 39 pitches.

Game 2: Paradise Valley 8, (25) Pima 7

The Aztecs fell on a walk-off RBI single in the ninth inning in the back-and-forth contest that saw five lead changes.

Sophomore Leon Cereceres scored on an error in the first inning, but the Pumas took their first lead with three runs in the second inning.

The Aztecs loaded the bases with three straight RBI singles to start off the fourth inning. Sophomore Mike Jones (Canyon del Oro) hit a sacrifice fly to bring in sophomore Jackson Glueck. Freshman Westin Thompson hit into a groundout, but it scored freshman Owen Wade to tie the game at 3. Martinez broke the tie with an RBI single that scored Figueroa-Brito.

Trailing 5-4, the Aztecs rallied back again in the seventh inning as Lorta drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Cereceres. Jones drew another bases-loaded walk to bring in freshman Cooper Kruk (Catalina Foothills) as Pima grabbed a 6-5 lead.

The Pumas tied it in the bottom of the sixth but Pima went up once again in the eighth inning as Glueck drew a bases loaded walk to score Cereceres. The Pumas tied the game in the bottom of the eighth and won it in the ninth.

Cereceres finished the game 4 for 5 with three runs while Martinez went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Glueck was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run.

Hall took the loss as he pitched 1/3 of an inning, giving up one run on two hits with one strikeout and one walk.

The Aztecs play their next six games at the West Campus Aztec Field. They will host Chandler-Gilbert on Tuesday in an ACCAC doubleheader. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
