No. 13 Pima wins sixth consecutive game with sweep of Paradise Valley

The Pima Community College softball team won its sixth straight game on Saturday after completing a doubleheader sweep of Paradise Valley at the West Campus Aztec Field.

The No. 13 Aztecs (23-4, 17-3 in ACCAC) took two games against the Pumas (1-19, 1-19) as sophomore Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View) finished the day going 4 for 7 with four RBIs, four runs, two doubles and one steal.

Freshman Alyssa Aguirre (Sabino) went 6 for 7 with an RBI, five runs and three stolen bases.

Sophomore Jiselle Nunez (Tucson) finished 4 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs. Sophomore Julissa Lopez (Tucson) was 2 for 7 with three RBIs and two runs. Freshmen Brooklyn Machado (Canyon del Oro) and Adriana Machado (Canyon del Oro) got the wins in the circle.

Game 1: (13) Pima 7, Paradise Valley 1

The Aztecs took the lead in the first inning and stymied the Puma offense.

Aguirre hit a lead-off single in the first inning and got in scoring position with a steal to second base. Figueroa hit an RBI double to put the Aztecs on the scoreboard. Nunez drew a walk with one out and two batters later, scored on an RBI single by freshman Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside) as Pima went up 2-0.

The Pumas cut the lead in half in the top of the second inning, but the Aztecs responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to score Aguirre. Nunez followed with an RBI single to plate Figueroa. Nunez scored later in the inning to put the Aztecs up 5-1.

Lopez had another RBI with her single in the fourth inning to bring in Aguirre and later scored on a passed ball.

Aguirre finished the game 3 for 4 with three runs while Lopez went 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run.

Figueroa was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs and Nunez went 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run. Ponce finished 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Brooklyn Machado got the win as she pitched 2 1/3 innings, giving up one run on four hits with one walk. Sophomore Belen Camacho (Pueblo) threw 4 1/3 innings, giving up two hits with 11 strikeouts in her relief appearance.

Game 2: (13) Pima 12, Paradise Valley 2 (F/5)

The Aztecs went off for 10 runs in the first inning to take control and earn a run-rule win.

The Pumas struck first with a run in the top of the first inning but the Aztecs followed up with their offensive barrage and then produced another two runs in the second inning.

The Aztecs had six run-scoring hits in the first inning and one bases-loaded walk.

Nunez capped off the inning with a two-run double to score Aguirre and Figueroa as the Aztecs went up 10-1.

Freshman Isabel Rodriguez (Walden Grove) hit an RBI single to score Ponce, who hit a leadoff triple to get on base in the second inning. Freshman Tayah Lyons scored on a fielder’s choice play.

Figueroa was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs while Aguirre was 3 for 3 with an RBI and two runs.

Nunez finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Lyons was 1 for 2 with an RBI and two runs, while Ponce had a hit with two runs. Lopez and sophomore Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside) each had an RBI and a run.

Adriana Machado got the win in the circle as she pitched three innings, giving up two runs on two hits with one strikeout and two walks.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday when they take on South Mountain in an ACCAC doubleheader. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
