Pima earns 12th consecutive win with sweep of Glendale

The Pima Community College softball team won its 12th straight game on Saturday after picking up two shutout victories at Glendale.

The No. 10 Aztecs (36-5, 28-4 in ACCAC) were led by sophomore Jiselle Nunez (Tucson) going 3 for 7 with four RBIs and three runs.

Freshman Isabel Rodriguez (Walden Grove) went 2 for 7 with four RBIs and two runs. Freshman Adriana Machado (Canyon del Oro) left her mark in the circle and at the plate while sophomore Sariah Ferrentino (Sabino) and Belen Camacho (Pueblo) combined for a shutout in the second game.

Game 1: (10) Pima 7, Glendale 0: 

Machado pitched a complete-game shutout as she gave up two hits with eight strikeouts and one walk on 95 pitches to pick up the win over Glendale (12-25, 10-24).

The Aztecs loaded the bases with two outs in the second inning before Rodriguez hit a three-run triple to center field to bring around freshman Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside), sophomore Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside) and freshman Kayla Hendrix (Canyon del Oro) to make it 4-0.

Rodriguez scored on sophomore Clarissa Figueroa’s (Mountain View) RBI single in the next at-bat to make it 5-0.

Nunez added to the lead with a two-run homer to center field in the fifth inning, bringing in sophomore Julissa Lopez (Tucson).

Nunez was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Rodriguez went 1 for 4 with three RBIs and a run. Lopez-Bedoy hit an RBI single in the second inning and was 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run. Ponce finished 2 for 3 with a run.

Game 2: (10) Pima 6, Glendale 0: 

The Aztecs picked up their second shutout win of the day as Ferrentino and Camacho combined to hold off the Gauchos. Ferrentino got the win after she pitched five innings, giving up three hits with five strikeouts and one walk on 74 pitches. Camacho threw the final two innings with five strikeouts.

Nunez hit a two-run triple in the third inning, bringing in Rodriguez and Figueroa. Nunez scored on a wild pitch as the Aztecs took a 4-0 lead.

Machado led off the fourth inning with a single and later scored on Rodriguez’s groundout to put the score at 5-0. Nunez scored on a fielder’s choice in the fifth inning to cap off Pima’s scoring.

Machado had an RBI single in the second inning and finished the game going 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Nunez went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs. Rodriguez was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run while freshman Isabel Mendoza (Cienega) finished 2 for 3 with a run.

The Aztecs will be back on the road Tuesday when they play an ACCAC doubleheader at Paradise Valley (6-28, 5-27). The first game starts at 12:00 p.m.

A showdown looms at South Mountain (36-10, 28-6) in Phoenix next Saturday. South Mountain, which hosts Central Arizona for a doubleheader Tuesday, has won 17 straight games.
