
The Pima Community College baseball team evened its overall record on Saturday after scoring 16 unanswered runs after trailing 6-0 in a 16-6 victory over Mesa at West Campus Aztec Field.
Pima (23-23, 15-18 ACCAC) earned the run-rule victory in six innings over Mesa (24-24, 14-19).
The Thunderbirds scored six runs in the second inning as the Pima offense scored runs in each frame from the second inning and thereafter.
Freshman Adriel Figueroa-Brito hit a bases-clearing three-run double in the fourth inning to score sophomore Mike Jones (Canyon del Oro), freshman Westin Thompson and sophomore Leon Cereceres as the Aztecs trailed 6-5.
Sophomore Jackson Glueck brought in Figueroa-Brito with a sacrifice fly to the game at 6.
The Aztecs took the lead in the fifth inning when Jones and Thompson hit back-to-back home runs.
Figueroa-Brito hit an RBI single to score Cereceres, capping off the three-run inning to make it 9-6.
The Aztecs took control in the sixth inning with seven runs to close the game.
Glueck led off with a home run to right field. With the bases loaded, Jones hit his second home run of the game as he took the second pitch to left field for the grand slam to put the score at 14-6.
Figueroa-Brito hit another RBI single in the inning to plate sophomore Ramon Martinez. After a pair of walks, freshman Aciel Guillen (Salpointe) hit a shot to left field for the walk-off single that scored Figueroa-Brito.
Jones finished 2 for 2 with five RBIs, two home runs, three runs scored and two walks. Figueroa-Brito went 3 for 5 with five RBIs and two runs. Glueck was 2 for 2 with two RBIs, two runs and two walks. Thompson put Pima on the board with an RBI single in the second inning and went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs. Cereceres and freshman Ezra Vidal (Sahuarita) each finished 1 for 4 with two runs.
Sophomore Brady Hall picked up the win in relief as he pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up five hits with two strikeouts and one walk on 60 pitches.
The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday for an ACCAC single game against Paradise Valley (21-28, 13-20). Game time is set for 1 p.m.
