
The Pima Community College baseball team lost ground in the ACCAC standings, including the last qualifying spot for the postseason, with its 2-1 loss Saturday at Scottsdale.
Pima (25-25, 17-20 ACCAC) is now 1 1/2 games behind fourth-place Chandler-Gilbert (26-25, 18-18) heading into the last three games of the season. Chandler-Gilbert defeated Glendale 8-2 on Saturday.
Chandler-Gilbert will host Scottsdale (29-22, 21-16) on Tuesday at 3 p.m. while Pima will play at home against Phoenix (18-29, 14-22), also on Tuesday at 3 p.m. The Aztecs need to beat Phoenix and Chandler-Gilbert to lose to Scottsdale to remain in contention for the playoffs.
Pima has a 2-4 record against Chandler-Gilbert this season.
The Aztecs took the lead Saturday against Scottsdale in the third inning, but the Artichokes rallied with two runs in the bottom of the eighth to win 2-1.
Sophomore Mike Jones (Canyon del Oro) had a lead-off walk and advanced to second base on a passed ball in the third inning. Freshman Aciel Guillen (Salpointe Catholic) grounded out to move Jones to third base. Sophomore Ramon Martinez sent a shot up the middle to bring in Jones to put the Aztecs on the board.
Sophomore Matt MacDonald drew a lead-off walk to start off the fifth inning. With one out, Guillen singled to left field. Martinez laid down a bunt, but MacDonald was called out at home plate. Sophomore Leon Cereceres groundout out to end the threat.
The Aztecs went down in order in the ninth.
Freshman Cooper Kruk (Catalina Foothills) added some excitement as he drove a shot to left field, but Scottsdale’s Logan Spetz made the play at the wall to end the game.
The Aztecs had two hits and two walks. Martinez finished with an RBI single while Guillen had a hit. Jones scored a run.
Sophomore Quintin Hennesy took the loss as he pitched three innings, giving up two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks on 54 pitches.
Freshman Hayden Green (Sabino) started the game and threw five shutout innings, giving up two hits with five strikeouts and three walks on 91 pitches.
