Macee Jackson pitches five-inning perfect game as No. 1 Salpointe advances in 4A tournament

4A ROUND TWO

No. 1 Salpointe 13, No. 8 Flagstaff 0, 5 innings

Senior ace Macee Jackson, recently chosen the Jet Sports Training Female Athlete of the Month for April, continued to dominate into May pitching a five-inning perfect game in the win for the Lancers (24-4) over visiting Flagstaff (25-7).

Jackson (13-2) struck out 11 batters to increase her season total to 177 — the most she has compiled in her three years starting in the circle. She is at 451 for her career.

Salpointe had 12 hits, led by sophomore Torrance Salyer’s 3-for-3 performance with a home run and six RBIs.

Junior Isabel Otero went 3 for 4 with three runs, woand four RBIs.

Seniors Anyssa Montano and CC Moraga each were 2 for 3 with Montano hitting a double and Moraga scoring twice.

Next: Salpointe will host No. 4 Surprise Paradise Honors (25-3) on Saturday at 11 a.m. in a winners’ bracket third round game.

No. 2 Mica Mountain 7, No. 10 Coconino 2

No. 6 Cactus Shadows 10, No. 3 Sahuarita 9

Sahuarita (26-6) rallied from an early 8-0 deficit and almost came back to win in the bottom of the seventh after scoring two runs against visiting Cactus Shadows.

The Mustangs’ six-run rally in the third inning, that cut the lead to 8-6, included a two-run double by senior Jayd Villa, RBI double by junior Viana Robles, and a three-run home run by junior Mayrani Munoz.

Cactus Shadows tacked on a couple of more runs and Sahuarita scored on a home run by senior Eliana Romero leading up to Sahuarita trailing 10-7 entering the bottom of the seventh.

Munoz started the rally that included five straight hits with a one-out double and freshman Athena Johnsen followed with a single. A single by junior Miriam Rosas-Valdez scored Munoz to cut the lead to 10-8.

After a single by junior Michelle Pena, senior Camila Vargas followed with another single that scored Johnsen.

A fielder’s choice groundout and a grounder to shortstop ended the game.

Five of the Mustangs recorded two hits — Vargas, Romero, Robles, sophomore Yareli Ortega and Munoz, and Pena tallied three hits as the No. 9 batter.

Munoz had three RBIs and Villa two.

Next: Sahuarita will host Coconino on Thursday at 4 p.m. in an elimination game.

6A FIRST ROUND ELIMINATION

No. 9 Sunnyside 13, No. 11 Goodyear Millennium 0

Senior ace Ashley Rosthenhausler had three hits and four RBIs and while pitching no-hit ball in the first three innings of Sunnyside’s five-inning run-rule victory over visiting Millennium (14-17) on Tuesday night in a 6A elimination game.

Rosthenhausler and fellow senior Annysa Pacho combined on the one-hitter for Sunnyside (21-9).

Rosthenhausler (13-7) struck out four and walked one in her three innings.

She also belted her seventh home run of the season and had a double.

Pacho went 2 for 3 with a double, triple and RBI and junior Celeste Borboa was 2 for 3 with a run and RBI. Senior Vianney Cruz went 1 for 2 with a triple and two runs.

Sunnyside produced 12 hits, seven of which went for extra bases.

Next: Sunnyside will play Thursday at 4 p.m. on the road against the loser of Wednesday’s game between No. 5 Basha (21-6-2) and No. 4 Phoenix Xavier (26-4).

5A ROUND TWO

No. 2 Mountain View 4, No. 7 Cienega 2

Mountain View (22-3) rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth to break the tie at 2 against visiting Cienega (19-11).

Senior Anyssa Bojorquez tripled with one out to start the fifth-inning rally.

Senior Alycia Gordin followed with a single that scored Bojorquez and put Mountain View ahead 3-2.

After senior Arianna Figueroa singled, advancing Gordin to third base, senior Mia Quinonez grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Gordin.

Figueroa (21-3) pitched the complete-game victory, scattering six hits while allowing a walk with five strikeouts. The two runs scored against her were unearned.

Bojorquez finished 3 for 3 with two runs, a double, two triples and a stolen base. Gordin was 2 for 3 with a run and a double. Sophomore Mia Lynch went 2 for 2 with a double.

Cienega was led by seniors Allison Mullen and Kay Morel each posting two hits. Mullen had two doubles and scored a run. Senior Micaela Valenzuela hit an RBI single.

Next: Mountain View will host No. 3 Scottsdale Chaparral (20-9) on Saturday at 11 a.m. in a third-round winners’ bracket game. Cienega will host No. 11 Waddell Canyon View (23-7) on Thursday at 4 p.m. in an elimination game.

2A SOFTBALL QUARTERFINAL

No. 5 Willcox 7, No. 4 Kingman Academy 0

Freshman Hattie Macumber pitched a three-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts and no walks to lead Willcox (23-6) to the win over host Kingman Academy (17-5).

The victory made for a pleasant 6-hour ride back to Willcox from Kingman.

Macumber was also one of two Cowgirls with two hits, including a solo home run, her 10th of the season.

Junior Gloria Encinas also had two hits.

Freshman Iza Pando, and sophomores Jacqueline Ramirez, Janelle Vandermuelen, and Karlie St. Clair each hit doubles.

Next: Willcox advances to the semifinals at the Papago Softball Complex in Phoenix on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against top-seeded Laveen Heritage Academy (24-4).
