A Southern Arizona team is guaranteed to play for the Arizona State Seniors All-Star title. The bad news is that all three teams will have to do it from the elimination bracket.
Flowing Wells beat Prescott Valley 12-2 thanks to a gutsy pitching effort from Daniel Carfagno. The Mountain View junior-to-be pitched 5 inning, striking out 6 and giving up zero earned runs. He strained his back in the third and pitched with discomfort the final two innings. He added two hits and four RBI.
Carlos Gallego added four RBI and scored three times. Catcher Matthew Trujillo also crossed the plate three times and just missed hitting on out of the park at Agua Fria HS. His fifth inning double hit halfway up the left field fence.
They will play Nogales on Sunday. Nogales held off several Blythe rallies to win 15-12. Blythe cut the Nogales lead to 10-5 after six but gave up five in the top half of the seventh. They matched that five of their own but had one runner thrown out at the plate and the game ended on a double play with the tying run on deck.
Nogales will have a rematch against Flowing Wells. Flowing Wells jumped out to a 10-0 lead in their first round contest, then had to hold on for a 12-9 win.
The winner will meet San Xavier on Monday. The District 12 representative fell to Buckeye 11-1 on Saturday, suffering their first loss.
