Marana senior football standout Sean Roebuck Jr. was involved in an automobile accident over the weekend that required him to undergo surgery that will likely keep him out of the 2026 football season.
Roebuck, who is from the famed Roebuck family at Marana, was one of the top receiving prospects in the state entering this season with the Tigers.
Toby Bourguet, founder and coach of Tucson Turf Elite, of which Roebuck has played for over the years, offered an update Monday on social media of Roebuck’s status.
Bourguet mentioned that Roebuck does not require surgery on a C7 fracture in his spine and that his broken collarbone will need a splint. Roebuck suffered two broken rubs and scrapes on the right side of his body.
“Most importantly, he is moving all of his extremities and responding well to all of the neurological tests,” Bourguet stated. “He will need plastic surgery to repair a fractured right eye socket, and he also has a broken jaw.
“He has small laceration on his liver that they are watching. He will remain sedated and intubated for a little while longer. We don’t have a concrete timeline yet for when they will wake him up and remove the breathing tube.”
Roebuck, whose brother Dezmen is a sophomore receiver at Washington, had 89 receptions and 1,076 receiving yards with eight touchdowns last season. He averaged 12.1 yards per reception and 89.7 receiving yards per game.
He led Arizona’s 5A Conference in receiving yards and receptions while helping Marana reach the state playoffs.
His father, Sean Sr., was a longtime boys basketball coach at Marana before he resigned from the position two weeks ago. He has remained as an assistant with the flag football team.
Dezmen was a record-breaking receiver in his Marana career before attending Washington. Malaysia Roebuck was a standout flag football performer for the Tigers.
Makayla Roebuck advanced to college as a wrestler and Isaiah Roebuck went on to play football and baseball in college. Both attended University of Jamestown (N.D.).
“Considering the severity of the accident, we know without a doubt that God had His hand on Lil Sean and was protecting him,” Bourguet stated. “There is so much we are thankful for right now. Thank you so much for every prayer, text, call, and all the love you have shown our family. Please keep praying for Sean and for the doctors as they make decisions about the next steps.”
Marana has experienced turbulence in the last week with coach Phillip Steward resigning and then rescinding his resignation, and this development with its star player, Sean Roebuck, suffering serious injuries in an automobile accident.
The Tigers begin their season Aug. 27 at home against Salpointe Catholic.
