Most wins: Johnson is tied with Mica Mountain’s Jay Campos with 145 career victories. They are in position to potentially reach 150 career victories this season along with Buena’s new coach Chris Determan, who has 144 career victories. Most of those wins occurred at Benson for Determan.

Coaches with state championships:

— Campos led Mica Mountain to the 2025 title, his first championship as a head coach after advancing to the championship four times at Sabino.

— Johnson won the 2012 Division II championship at Ironwood Ridge, defeating Peoria Centennial 27-3.

— Ryan McBrayer won the 2023 3A championship at Sabino, 68-46 over Paradise Honors.

— Kent Middleton won the 2024 3A championship at Pusch Ridge, 26-7 over ALA-West Foothills.

Worth noting: Determan reached two state championship games at Benson (2015 and 2020). Scott McKee was an assistant on CDO’s 2023 championship team.

— McKee is eight wins shy of joining the 100-win club. Most of his wins occurred at Sahuaro, where he was 71-62 in 13 years, including a 4A state semifinal run in 2018.

— Cienega’s Justin Argraves is closing in on 100 wins at 86, entering his 17th year as a head coach at Mountain View, Tucson High and Cienega.

— McBrayer has the most current wins of a coach at one school, 64 in nine years at Sabino. He is also one of six coaches coaching at their alma maters. Ernest Ivy of San Manuel, Hunter Long of Douglas, Sly Lewis at Pueblo, Carlos Lopez of Bisbee and Thomas Cortez of Eloy Santa Cruz are the others.

— Long is one of three former Arizona players serving as a head coach. Desert View’s Robert Bonillas and McKee are the others.
