Catalina quarterback Caden Ozment is the model of perseverance, sticking with the Trojan program through having a new head coach each of his four years at the central Tucson high school.
His coaches at Catalina: Greg McKinstry II in 2023, Andy Fetsis in 2024, Virgil Henderson in 2025 and Keith Edwards this season.
Ozment did not allow his unsettling past and his time with the struggling Trojans create a down-and-out situation.
That was evident in Catalina’s season-opening 28-20 win over visiting Santa Rita on Friday night.
Ozment was an identifiable leader, accounting for all four of Catalina’s touchdowns.
He completed 7 of 14 passes for 224 yards with two touchdowns, one of them an 84-yard scoring strike to Nate Gastellum. He also connected with Hayden Rogers for a 12-yard touchdown pass.
His two rushing touchdowns in the first half helped Catalina establish control of the game.
An interception and 40-yard return by Ozment, who is a free safety on defense, in the fourth quarter led to the Trojans’ fourth and final touchdown (the pass to Rogers).
For his performance in the win over Santa Rita, Ozment is the APS Digital Print/Frog & Firkin Week 0 Player of the Week.
