Sunnyside senior Aydan Tapia did not even know until last Wednesday that he will switch from linebacker to running back to reinforce a position hit by early-season injuries.
Sunnyside coach Thomas Romack and his coaching staff noticed Tapia’s instincts busting through holes in the line and his toughness in practice and decided to add Tapia to the backfield at Southside rival Pueblo on Friday.
It was a move of genius as Tapia controlled the game from the opening possession, rushing for 50 yards on nine carries, in the Blue Devils’ 25-14 victory.
Tapia finished with 273 yards on 32 carries and four touchdowns in his first game as a running back after playing at linebacker his three previous years on the varsity.
For his performance, Tapia is the APS Digital Print/Frog & Firkin Week 2 Player of the Week.
