One play that may have gone unnoticed in last night’s 61-42 non-descript victory over Northwestern State was Kadeem Allen’s drive to the basket in the second half with a decent look at the hoop only to pass it off to Kaleb Tarczewski on the block.

Tarczewski juggled the ball, perhaps a bit surprised by the pass, but gathered it in to lay it in.

Allen is showing no signs of having any hangover from being The Man and prolific scorer at Hutchison (Kan.) Junior College. He is a mature fourth-year player in college after two years in junior college and another last season as a redshirt.

Few realize that Allen, who scored 25.9 points a game in his sophomore season at Hutchison, also averaged 5.9 assists a game.

“We recruited Kadeem to play both guard positions,” Miller reiterated last night during the 1290-AM postgame show. Miller also said that he and his coaching staff “will look to move in that direction” of playing the combination more of Allen and reserve point guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright together.

Through the first four games, Allen has emerged as one of the most consistently productive players, posting a rating of .793. In last night’s game, Allen was solid across the board: Five rebounds, five assists, three steals and one blocked shot. He had four points and did not commit a turnover in 22 minutes.

As the starting point guard, Allen has 19 assists with only five turnovers, a close to 4-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. Arizona’s level of competition is suspect to this point but that ratio is in T.J. McConnell territory.

Jackson-Cartwright and Allen have combined for 35 assists with only nine turnovers.

If Tarcewski and the ever-productive Dusan Ristic are the 7-foot “Twin Towers”, occasionally playing together, the Allen and Jackson-Cartwright combination is like the “Twin Toolboxes” (to steal a Steve Lavin term).

Lavin stated last night during the Pac-12 Networks telecast that Allen went to his toolbox to stuff his stats.

That kind of utility strength is what Miller requires over averaging 20 points a game. It’s all about the team and process, detail to the bone.

Sometimes it may not be pretty, like the game last night overall, but Arizona moved on with another win (its 42nd consecutive triumph at McKale) with Allen’s poise and productivity making a mark on his teammates once again.

HOW ARE THEY DOING?
Present RPI ranking of non-conference opponents Arizona has played. The Wildcats’ RPI rating is No. 194. Their next opponent, Santa Clara (0-4) has an RPI of No. 331.
