CATCH UP ON THE COUNTDOWN BY VISITING: ARIZONA’S TOP 100 INDIVIDUAL RECORDS

Only 87 days separate us from the start of Rich Rodriguez’s fifth season at Arizona, when the Wildcats play Brigham Young on Sept. 3 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.

As is customary on this Web site, we will count down the days with an interesting element associated with each day. This year the topic is the top 100 individual records in Arizona’s storied football past.

Arizona quarterback Bruce Hill finished the 1975 season with only three interceptions in 215 attempts, an Arizona record percentage of 1.39 per attempt for a season.

Compiling the list was no easy task, but it was feasible to do with the information provided in the record books by the Arizona media relations department, and we appreciate that.

In past years, we have counted down the top games and highlighted players and some of the top plays in Wildcat history. A couple of years ago in our top 100 countdown, we showcased the 1914 team that was responsible for Arizona becoming the “Wildcats”.

Back to this year’s countdown of the top 100 individual records in the 117 years of Arizona football:

No. 87

Fewest Passes Had Intercepted (Pct. of Attempts), Season: 1.39, Bruce Hill, 1975 (3 in 215)

The consecutive passes without an interception record will be ranked higher later in this series. Bruce Hill, who starred at quarterback under Jim Young from 1973-75, at one time held the record of 128 as a senior. That efficiency allowed him to set the Arizona record with only 1.39 percent of his attempts (215) resulting in an interception that season.

He threw only three interceptions that season, his precision helped a great deal by four running backs who gained at least 315 yards — Dave Randolph (657 yards), Marvin Baker (464), Derral Davis (440) and Dean Schock (315). He rushed for 274 yards himself.

Hill also had some of the most reliable receivers to throw to with Scott Piper, Theo Bell and Keith Hartwig. His consecutive passes streak without an interception stretched over seven games that season.
