Tracking Tucson-area hoops talent from NCAA Division I to junior college

The following is a compilation of 50 players who graduated from Southern Arizona high schools who are now playing in college from NCAA Division I to junior college.

Noteworthy:

— Catalina Foothills has the most with seven who have moved on to the next level. Tucson Magnet High School is next with five.

— Falcons alum Austin Nehls, son of former Arizona guard Joe Nehls, scored a career-high 26 points for Central Connecticut State last week in an 83-60 loss at Fordham.

— Former Sahuaro guard Nate Renfro, now at San Francisco, is one of four Cougars in the college ranks. A sophomore with the Dons, he is averaging 6.8 points and 6.5 rebounds. Palo Verde also has four former players each who are on college rosters.

— Salpointe Catholic has three alums, including Arizona senior Talbott Denny, an Arizona player who tranferred from Lipscomb and is out this season with a knee injury.

— Cienega also has three alums on college rosters, highlighted by former guard Terrence Johnson who now plays for James Madison. His former Cienega teammates, guard Isaiah Murphy, averages 18.3 points a game for Pima. Rincon features three alums as well

— Other top performers include Pueblo’s Franky Teran of Antelope Valley (19.3 points per game), Palo Verde’s Ezini Ugbisien of Northern New Mexico (10.2 points and 5.6 rebounds), Salpointe’s Emilio Acedo of Pima (16.9 points), Nogales’ Adalberto Diaz of Tohono O’odham Junior College (15.2 points and 7.1 rebounds), Sunnyside’s Jacob Inlan with South Mountain Community College (20 points and 12.3 rebounds a game) and Empire’s Deion James of Pima (20.8 points and 8.5 rebounds).

— Teran is coming off a season last year in which he led all of NAIA in 3-point shooting percentage and earned All-America Honorable Mention. The senior guard poured scored 17.5 points per game while making 71-of-139 threes (.511). Teran was recognized as the California Pacific Conference Player of the Week for Dec. 12, 2016. He made 8-of-12 3-pointers and 11-of-16 overall from the floor, en route to a 38-point performance for the Pioneers in their win over Shepherd. Teran, who currently is fourth in the nation in 3-point field goals made per game (4.125), also connected on all eight of his free throws and pulled down five rebounds in that game.

— Another Pueblo product — 6’5″ wing player Naquwan Solomon — is having a highly productive freshman season at Dean College in Franklin, Mass. He is averaging 18.3 points and 11.2 rebounds a game.
