Former Sabino standout and current assistant coach Ryan McBrayer was named head coach of the Sabercats on Thursday afternoon according to a statement sent out by former head coach Jay Campos.
Campos was hired in 2003 and finished with a record of 133-35. He set a standard of 14 straight playoff appearances, five semifinal finishes and four runner-up finishes including a second-place finish in the 3A playoffs this past winter. He formally resigned on Jan. 10 to concentrate on his administrative duties at the school.
“I’m incredibly thankful for this opportunity the administration at Sabino and TUSD have given me,” McBrayer said.
“Coach Campos has laid a great framework for this program and I look forward to the great challenge the Sabino football tradition dictates. We’ve had our guys working hard in the weight room since January so right now job number one will be putting together a staff that can help lead this group of young men to the wins they are capable of.”
McBrayer recorded 45 tackles to help lead the Sabercats to a 12-2 record and a runner-up finish in 2006. McBrayer recovered a fumble to help pace Sabino to an early 7-0 lead over Saguaro but Saguaro went on to win 41-21.
