Brianna Aguilar (Salpointe) went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two appearances last week for Grand Canyon to earn WAC Pitcher of the Week honors.
Aguilar threw the first no-hitter of her career in an 11-0 shutout of Kansas City in the series finale. Only a hit batter kept Aguilar from a perfect game as the WAC leader in ERA for conference play (0.70) did not issue a walk. Ten of her 15 outs came on ground balls and only two UMKC batters hit the ball out of the infield. Aguilar also earned the win in relief in the series opener after coming in for 2.0 innings. She finished the week with five strikeouts and no walks over 7.0 innings while allowing just one hit and no runs. Aguilar also held opponents to a .045 batting average.
Nick Gonzales (Cienega) went 11-for-16 with nine extra-base hits to help New Mexico State go 3-1 on the week and move into a tie for first place in the league standings. In NM State’s lone non-conference game, he was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a pair of RBIs and three runs scored in a 15-13 win over Arizona. He opened up WAC play against UT Rio Grande Valley by going 5-for-6 from the plate and hitting for the cycle with four runs scored, also adding an extra double for good measure. He was 4-for-7 the remainder of the series to finish with a .688 batting average on the week to go with a 1.563 slugging percentage.
Carlos Villarreal (Rio Rico) is majoring in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Arizona. During the season opener at the Stanford Invitational, Villarreal ran the 5K for outdoor events with a time of 14:23.87 breaking his personal record.
“Carlos has been a leader on the track and in the classroom since he got to the University of Arizona,” said academic counselor LeAnne Shoemakersaid in a release. “He is such a great student to be around and has been truly impressive during his wildcat career!”
Ina addition, former Mountain View multi-sport athlete Stanley Berryhill earned academic recognition from Arizona. Berryhill graduated from Orange Lutheran High School in California.
Carlos Apodaca (Rio Rico) was named an NWCA Scholar All-American for Embry-Riddle. Apodaca was also an NAIA Wrestling Scholar-Athlete.
Former Tanque Verde pitcher Kellye Springstead earned a WAC Pitcher of the Week nomination from Cal Baptist.

Andy Morales was recognized by the AIA as the top high school reporter in 2014 and he was awarded the Ray McNally Award in 2017 and he has been a youth, high school and college coach for over 30 years. His own children have won multiple state high school championships and were named to all-state teams. Competing in hockey, basketball, baseball and track & field in high school, his unique perspective can only be found here and on AZPreps365.com. Andy is the Southern Arizona voting member of the Ed Doherty Award, recognizing the top football player in Arizona, and he was named a Local Hero by the Tucson Weekly for 2016.
