Sunnyside improved to 6-0 on the year after taking out Walden Grove in the quarterfinal round and Tucson in the semifinals held Friday at Salpointe. The Blue Devils will face Salpointe (5-1) in the championship match of the Brandon Bean Classic Saturday night at 6 p.m.
The Lancers beat Rincon/UHS and Cienega to reach the final. Sunnyside beat Salpointe 5-1 in pool play on Wednesday and Sunnyside is the defending 5A state champion and Salpointe won the 4A state title.
For the girls, Salpointe is 5-0 but the Lancers survived a difficult playoff day by beating Sahuaro in PKs 5-3 in the morning and then Catalina Foothills in PKs 4-2 in the second match to get to the championship. Cienega beat Sabino and Tucson to set up the final with the Lancers.
Salpointe and Cienega (5-0) will play in a power-ranking match on Tuesday, Dec. 10. The Lancers won their third state title in a row last year.
THE BRANDON BEAN
The Brandon Bean Classic is held every year to honor a former Salpointe player who passed away in 1992 after an on-field collision at a soccer scrimmage. In addition, the tournament also honors former Lancer Laura Kea who died in an auto accident on her way to a soccer tournament.
