Jet Sports Training Male Athlete of the Month: Cienega’s Derrick Vargas

Cienega is 26-4 and rated No. 1 in 5A boys volleyball in the state entering the postseason and senior outside hitter/middle blocker Derrick Vargas is a significant reason for the Bobcats’ dominance.

Vargas, 6-foot-5, is ranked No. 17 nationally in hitting percentage at .444, according to MaxPreps, and he leads the Bobcats in kills (224) and kills per set (3.0).

Cienega was unbeaten (8-0) in its 5A Southern matches in April with Vargas one of the captains.

Also in the month, he recorded hitting percentages of .600 against Sabino, .700 against Williams Field and .455 against Ironwood Ridge and Catalina Foothills. He also averaged 3.1 kills per set.

His dominance in April for the top 5A team in the state has earned him Jet Sports Training Male Athlete of the Month honors.
