Pima women finish 2022 by going unbeaten in Aztec Holiday Classic

The Pima Community College women’s basketball team closed out play in the Aztec Holiday Classic on Saturday finishing 3-0 against NJCAA Division I programs.

The No. 12 ranked Aztecs (10-3) defeated Big Spring (Texas) Howard College 66-56 on Saturday after defeating Bismarck (N.D.) State College 74-52 on Thursday and Bellingham (Wash.) Whatcom College 87-51 on Friday.

With the Aztecs up 58-51 against Howard, they were forced to the foul line in the final 1:21 of the game.

Sophomores Angel Addleman (Palo Verde grad) and Luisa Chavez (Rio Rico) combined to go 8 for 8; Addleman went 6 for 6 and Chavez was 2 for 2.

Up 35-33 in the third quarter, the Aztecs got a spark from Chavez as she went on a 7-0 run to give Pima some breathing room heading into the fourth quarter, up 42-33.

The Aztecs got their biggest lead at 51-39 with 5:08 left in the fourth quarter after freshman Dominique Acosta (Nogales) converted on a three-point play.

Chavez scored a team-high 17 points and also had nine rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block.

Addleman closed out the game with 10 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. She was 6 for 6 from the foul line for the game. Pima went 15 for 17 from the stripe as a team.

Sophomore Matehya Aberle also scored in double figures as she added 12 points on 6 for 10 shooting.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Gym and ACCAC conference play when they play South Mountain Community College on Wednesday at the West Campus Gym. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
