Off-the-beaten-path storylines: Arizona Wildcats at Washington Huskies

[tps_title]Pac-12 not penalty prone[/tps_title]

Say what you want about Pac-12 refs — and there is plenty to say (did you watch last night’s Oregon-ASU game?) — but one thing they do less than others is throw an abundance of flags.

Heading into last night’s game in Tempe, five Pac-12 teams were among the top 30 in fewest penalties per game. ASU was No. 2 nationally at 3.86 but the Sun Devils committed nine penalties for 70 yards in the 61-55 triple-overtime defeat.

Arizona is ranked No. 28 with 5.25 penalties per game. Washington is tied for No. 17 at 4.86 a game.

With the way the game is played today, the Wildcats will never go lower than the record of only 2.5 penalties per game in 1937. But five penalties or less a game means Arizona is not hurting itself with silly mistakes.

Rich Rodriguez has instilled discipline in his team’s actions on the field.
