Tucson youths Bejarano, Castro advance in Team USA baseball quest

Tucson’s Mario Bejarano and Ruben Kito Castro have qualified in their respective age groups to represent the West Region when they go to the USA Baseball National Training Complex in North Carolina in August.

At that time, they will have the opportunity to showcase themselves in an effort to become part of Team USA.

Castro is a right-handed pitcher/shortstop who qualified in the 13-and-under division, which will play at the training complex in Cary, N.C., from Aug. 9-13. Bejarano, a left-handed pitcher and outfielder, will take part in the 14-and-under competition from Aug. 24-27.

The 2017 USA Baseball National Team Identification Series (NTIS) is the most comprehensive player identification program offered by Team USA.

Players such as Bejarano and Castro participated in a selection event on the regional level last weekend in Phoenix with the aim of being named to the regional team.

From the final NTIS events in North Carolina in August, USA Baseball will invite a minimum of 62 players to future National Team Trials, National Team Development Program (NTDP) and Tournament of Stars opportunities with the ultimate goal of being selected to represent our country as a part of Team USA in 2018.
