Playoffs: Not a good night for Southern Arizona volleyball

It was a bad night for volleyball in Southern Arizona with nine teams falling out of the playoffs including all 4A and 5A teams. Only two teams from Southern Arizona survived Tuesday night after No. 16 Sabino swept No. 17 Yuma Catholic in the 3A Play-In bracket and No. 16 Benson held off No. 17 Pinon 3-1 in the 2A Play-In bracket.

In all, only No. 4 Tanque Verde and Sabino remain in the 3A playoffs, Benson is alive in the 2A playoffs and No. 5 St. David, No. 12 San Simon and No. 15 Valley Union remain in the 1A ranks.

The remaining six teams from Southern Arizona will play on Friday.

In Division I golf action held at the Omni Tucson National, Tucson High standout Angelica Martinez finished in 23rd place with an 11-over-par 153 (74-79) on the Sonoran Course and Cienega standout Daniel Henely took 9th on the boys side with a 1-under 145 (73-72) on the Catalina Course. Buena standout Isaac Ruiz came in 41st (83-75 158) and Cienega standout Diego Guerrero came in 48th (77-83 160).
