Sunnyside’s Gonzalez, Tucson’s Mann make college commitments

The recent commitments of Sunnyside linebacker/running back Andrew Gonzalez to Muskingum University and Tucson defensive end Troy Mann to Concordia (Minn.) increases the total of local Class of 2021 prospects making a commitment to 39.

Muskingum and Concordia are NCAA Division III programs. Muskingum is in New Concord, Ohio, and Concordia is located at Moorehead, Minn.

“I really put a lot of time into thinking about where I was going. I stayed up countless nights just thinking, doing research. Research about the school, what the school has to offer, the area, the coaching staff, the players,” Gonzalez mentioned about his choice. “I talked to my parents and family about it so many times and they would always say ‘Go where your you feel is right,’ and I feel like I’ve made the right decision.”

Mann is the third Tucson High Class of 2021 prospect to commit or sign to college.

Daniel Becerra, a wide receiver/safety, and Martin Barreras, a running back/linebacker, are both headed to Chadron (Neb.) State.

Gonzalez is the second Sunnyside player to make a commitment. Anthony Galvez, a wide receiver, announced Feb. 17 he is headed to Simpson College.

“I picked Muskingum because I felt like I was actually wanted there and I wouldn’t just be another student or another number,” Gonzalez said. “My recruiter always checked up on me to see how I was doing. And that really made a good impression on me. Another reason why I chose Muskingum is because it’s a close-knit family community.

“I’m really big on family. Another reason was of course it was the most affordable for me and my family.
