CARLIE’S SCOOP: Home opener, a special Wildcat and new walk-up songs

Hello, Wildcat fans!

I’m happy to announce that I will be writing a weekly column for AllSportsTucson.com throughout this year’s softball season. This column will be dedicated to all things Arizona softball, as well as a look into my day-to-day life as a Wildcat.

Today officially marks the start of the 2022 softball season. Our home opener will be at 6 p.m. against Southern Utah. It is exciting to be able to play at Rita, in front of all you fans once again. I am also looking forward to being able to play in front of my family. Being from Tucson has allowed them to be able to attend every home game. I am grateful that they were able to support me throughout my first year and I’m glad that they will be able to do the same this year.

The offseason has felt long because of our anticipation for the start of the season. All games at Rita are special, but none as special as the first. I will never forget the first game I played at Rita and I’m excited for our newcomers to be able to experience that same feeling.

Aside from our preparations for our games, we were visited by a special guest. I was able to meet Abi Rose, the newest addition to our team. Abi is five years old and has been battling pediatric cancer since she was two. She was originally adopted by the team in 2019, but she needed a break. Now that she is doing better, we are happy to have her back. She came to visit the team last week and we were able to have a team dinner where we ate her favorite food, Taco Bell. We also got to spend some time with her, blowing bubbles and decorating the sidewalks around the Lapan Family Center with chalk. She’s a sweet little girl and we are lucky to have her on our team. She will be out at games this weekend to cheer us on.

With every new softball season comes new walk-up songs. We always look forward to picking new walk-up music each year. Here are my walk-up song picks for this season:

Drop It Like It’s HotSnoop Dogg ft. Pharrell Williams

Let’s GrooveEarth, Wind, and Fire

I look forward to being back on the field and I’m happy that we get to start off the new season at home in front of our fans. I hope to see you all there this weekend in the Candrea Classic!

Carlie Scupin is a standout first baseman with the Arizona Wildcats under new coach Caitlin Lowe. She is a native Tucsonan recruited by legendary coach Mike Candrea since she was in middle school. She is a 2020 graduate of Tucson High School. Last season as a freshman, Scupin was a Pac-12 All-Freshman selection and an NFCA All-West Region third-team pick. As a junior at Tucson High, she was named the 2019 Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year. She was also selected to the USA Today All-America second team in 2019. She hit 44 home runs while hitting .623 during her high school career, which was cut short her senior season of 2020 due to COVID-19.
