Amelie Buffill- Gutierrez led a balanced scoring effort for Sabino with 20 points in the Sabercats’ 66-31 win over visiting ALA-Ironwood in a 3A state playoff first-round game on Tuesday night.
Emma Wall finished with 16 points and Kadie Healey scored 14 of her 16 points in the first half for No. 11-seeded Sabino, which improved to 21-4.
No. 22 ALA-Ironwood (10-12) was led by Loanne Billon’s 16 points.
Sabino will play at No. 6 Whiteriver Alchesay (21-9) in a second-round game on Friday night at 7 p.m.
The Sabercats won the state title in 2019-20 with Jaamal Rhodes as head coach. Buffill-Gutierrez and Healey were part of that team.
Former Sunnyside coach James Jackson now leads the Sabercats’ program.
