No. 10 Pima women top Chandler-Gilbert to increase winning streak to six games

The Pima Community College women’s basketball team rallied from an early deficit to defeat Chandler-Gilbert on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The No. 10 Aztecs (15-3, 7-1 in ACCAC) trailed 15-8 after the Coyotes (5-12, 1-7) went on a 15-2 run. Pima closed the lead to 15-12 going into the second quarter.

The Aztecs trailed 18-14 but went on a 10-0 run to lead 24-18. They led 26-25 at halftime.

Sophomore Amelie Buffill-Gutierrez (Sabino) did not play in the first half but jumpstarted the Aztecs in the third quarter as they went on a 10-2 run to take a 40-31 lead.

She went 4 for 4 in the quarter with eight points and gave Pima their first double-digit lead at 47-36 heading into the fourth quarter.

Pima outscored the Coyotes 21-14 in the final quarter and never surrendered its double-digit lead.

Freshman Kiley Sours-Miller (formerly of Arizona State) finished with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. She finished with seven blocks and two steals.

Bufill-Gutierrez made her first six shots and finished the game going 7 for 8 from the field with 15 points. She also added two rebounds and two assists.

Freshman Lucy Land contributed eight points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals while sophomore Kennedi Niemann had seven points and six rebounds. Freshman Melicia Nelson added four points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals.

The Aztecs next play at South Mountain in Phoenix on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
