
The Pima Community College men’s basketball team improved to 20-0 overall, 8-0 in ACCAC Division II play Saturday, routing Chandler-Gilbert — one of the top teams in the conference — at West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.
The 20 wins to start a season is a program record.
The No. 5 Aztecs took a double-digit lead in the first half and never relinquished it against Chandler-Gilbert (12-8, 5-3).
The victory improved Pima coach Brian Peabody’s career head coaching record to 696-255 in 32 years as a head coach.

The teams went back and forth to begin the game as the score was tied on four occasions with four lead changes in the first eight minutes. The Aztecs struggled from the field missing their first seven of eight shots.
With the score tied at 11, the Aztecs went on an 8-0 run to make it 19-11 and forcing the Coyotes to call timeout.
Chandler-Gilbert cut it to 19-14 but the Aztecs went on a 13-4 run to go up 32-18.
The Aztecs went on to outscore the Coyotes 15-5 in the final 5:33 of the half to take a 47-23 at halftime.
Pima continued to build its lead in the second half as the Aztecs led by as much as 40 points at the end of the game. They outscored Chandler-Gilbert 48-32 in the second half.
Sophomore Kota Benson, a former Baboquivari standout who completed his high school career at Mesa, scored a game-high and season-high 18 points as he went 6 for 11 from the field and hit two 3-pointers. He also finished with four assists.
Sophomore Cohenj Gonzales scored 13 of his 17 points in the first half as he went 8 for 15 from the field to go with three rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Freshman Mason Hunt provided a spark off the bench scoring 15 points. He hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first half and closed out the game going 5 for 9 shooting and 3 for 3 from beyond the arc.
Sophomore Wes Ball (Marana) fell short of a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds. He went 3 for 3 from the field.
The Aztecs next play at South Mountain in Phoenix on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
