2021 RECORD: 5-4

  • Jorge Mendivil enters his ninth season as Amphi’s head coach with schedule that is heavy with road games early but the Panthers play three straight home games in the 4A Gila later on.
  • Amphi’s non-region schedule includes games at Flowing Wells (Sept. 2), Tempe Marcos de Niza (Sept. 23) and Rincon/University (Oct. 7). Marcos de Niza is coming off a 4-6 season, including a 21-20 loss at Amphi last year. The Panthers also host Phoenix Thunderbird on Sept. 16 as well as Pueblo on Sept. 30. The Panthers lost to Thunderbird 24-7 at home last season.
  • Amphi’s 4A Gila opponents this year are Catalina Foothills, Rio Rico, Sahuarita, Sahuaro and Walden Grove. Sahuarita, Sahuaro and Walden Grove replace Empire and Douglas — both of which shifted to to the 4A Kino. Sahuarita was a 3A South member last year that appealed the AIA to move up to 4A. Rio Rico was to be moved by the AIA to 3A but the Hawks successfully appealed to stay at 4A. Both schools wanted to avoid longer travel to the 3A locales and the competition level of the 3A was one of the best of any classification last season.
  • Amphi opens region play at defending champ Catalina Foothills on Oct. 14 before hosting Sahuaro, Walden Grove and Rio Rico in successive weeks. The Panthers end the regular season Nov. 11 at Sahuarita.
