  • Former Arizona football player Hunter Long, who was a lineman on the 2014 Pac-12 South championship team, is entering his fourth season as head coach at his alma mater with the hope to establish continuity after playing only nine games in the previous two seasons because of COVID-19 protocol.
  • The non-region schedule begins with the traditional rivalry game at Bisbee on Sept. 2. The Bulldogs rallied to beat the Pumas 24-21 at home in last year’s season opener to claim The Pick trophy for the first time since 2016. The miner’s pick trophy signifies the copper-mining industry of Douglas and Bisbee. It was the 152nd meeting between the two schools. Douglas leads the series 80-64-8 since it began in 1906 at the old Don Luis Park in Bisbee.
  • Douglas’ non-region schedule also includes games at Cholla (Sept. 16) and at home against Rio Rico (Sept. 23) before two games against Phoenix-area teams — at home against Glendale Independence (Sept. 30) and at Phoenix Carl Hayden (Oct. 7). Independence, a 5A team, went 1-8 last season. Carl Hayden finished 6-4.
  • The Bulldogs’ 4A Gila slate this season includes some tough opponents such as CDO, Mica Mountain, Empire and Pueblo. They end the year at home against Vista Grande of Casa Grande to round out region play. At least Long’s team plays three region games at home including CDO on Oct. 14 and Empire Oct. 28 before playing Vista Grande Nov. 11.
