No. 5 Pima Women are now 1-0 in Pool Play after eliminating No. 9 Northeast (Nebraska) 1-0 Tuesday night at the Kino North Stadium. The Aztecs put together 13 shots on goal in the match compared to only 5 for Northeast but the Aztecs got all the offense they needed when Mari Acosta (Sahuarita) scored on a rebound off of Northeast keeper Carolin Stahlmann in the 16th minute.

The Aztecs dominated play but the score did not reflect the effort, especially with a shot in 38th minute and another in the 40th hitting the crossbar. Pima has a strong defense with Lina Amparano (Salpointe) picking up 5 saves to help secure the victory but the team did not fall back to preserve the lead in the final 10 minutes of play and the shots kept coming which ultimately caused frustration on the Northeast side of play.

Meredith Scott (Walden Grove) took 7 shots on goal and Caitlyn Maher (Catalina Foothills) collected 3.

The Aztecs will face No. 4 Northwest Mississippi on Wednesday at 5:50 p.m. in the Kino Grandstand. Northwest Mississippi beat Northeast 4-1 on Monday. The winner will advance to the semifinal round on Friday.
