Sunnyside top team in Prescott’s Mile High Challenge Wrestling Tournament after first day

Sunnyside’s wrestling dynasty started strong in the opening day Friday of the Mile High Challenge Wrestling Tournament at the Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott.

The Blue Devils lead with 188.5 points through the quarterfinal round of the boys tournament. Marana is second at 103.5, Mica Mountain is fourth at 98 and Canyon del Oro seventh at 85.

Sunnyside’s girls team finished second in the girls competition that was completed Friday.

The Blue Devils had 141.5 points, behind Basha’s 166.

The Marana girls were fourth with 91 points. CDO (60.5 points) was sixth and Mica Mountain (42) eighth.

SOUTHERN ARIZONA CHAMPIONS

114 – Iliana Castaneda, Sunnyside, won by 3-1 decision over Sophia Smith, Canyon del Oro

138 – Jade Armstrong, Sunnyside, won by 6-5 decision over Ali Estala, Chino Valley

185 – Davia Henry, Marana, went 4-0 in round-robin (winning each match by fall) to claim the title
