Tucson Saguaros right-hander Justin Fuson, a former Fresno-Pacific University standout, got the win Wednesday night allowing two hits in six innings with nine strikeouts and a walk in 4-0 win at the Roswell (N.M.) Invaders.
The Saguaros (25-9) are in first place of the Mountain Division of the Pecos Independent Baseball League heading into Thursday’s start of a three-game series with the Austin Weirdos at Kino Stadium at 7 p.m. (tickets are $10).
The Weirdos are struggling mightily with a 1-30 record. They are 0-26 on the road.
Tucson has played only nine games at home and have a 6-3 record.
The Saguaros, who have only 15 regular-season games remaining, have already qualified for the Pecos League playoffs. They will host the Alpine (Texas) Cowboys in a best-of-three first-round series from Aug. 1-3.
In their win over Roswell (23-14) on Wednesday night, former New York Yankees farmhand outfielder Madison Santos of the Dominican Republic had five hits in all of his at-bats.
Santos, who played last year at Single-A Tampa, leads Tucson with a batting average of .460 (63 of 137) with 17 doubles, eight home runs and 38 RBIs.
