Empire High School graduate Jaymon Cervantes, an assistant coach at Sahuaro, was the winning pitcher for the Tucson Saguaros in a 9-3 victory Friday over the Austin Weirdos in a game that was stopped after five innings because sprinklers went off and made the field at Kino Stadium unplayable.
The final game of the three-game series is Saturday night at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10.
Cervantes, a 6-foot-2 and 220-pound right-hander, was a standout at Minot State in 2017 and 2018 after attending Rainy River Community College in Minnesota following his graduation from Empire in 2014.
He presently is an assistant coach at Sahuaro High School.
Cervantes struck out seven and walked one in five innings while scattering seven hits in Friday’s win that improved the Saguaros to 27-9. They are in first place of the Mountain Division of the Pecos Independent Baseball League, a game ahead of Trinidad (Colo.) Triggers (26-10).
Austin is now 1-32, including 0-28 on the road.
In one interesting part of Friday’s game, Salpointe and Pima graduate Marcus Catalano, a former assistant at Sahuaro playing with Austin, pitched to Cervantes, who managed to hit one of his two doubles against him.
Cervantes and Colin Johnson, formerly of Alfred (N.Y.) State, each went 3 for 3 to lead Tucson.
Johnson doubled and DeShawn Johnson (a former Cal State San Bernardino standout) homered for Tucson.
