Baja Arizona Baseball Notes: Cory Bonstrom, Keith Zuniga and Alex Robles

Former Canyon del Oro standout Cory Bonstrom led the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) in stolen bases (30) and walks (40) playing for the Swift Current 57’s. This Canadian collegiate summer league can be traced back to 1931. Bonstrom is a sophomore outfielder for Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Former Nogales and Pima standout Keith Zuniga is now an assistant coach for the University of Hawai’i. Zuniga spent the last three seasons on the staff of New Mexico State, most recently the interim head coach for the Aggies.

Former Tucson High standout Alex Robles is playing in his tenth year at the professional level with the last five years playing in various professional leagues in Mexico. This year, the 2020 Mexican Pacific League Rookie of the Year is playing in his fourth stint with the Tigres de Quintana Roo. He leads the team in games played at 84, is second in at bats with 304, is second on the team with 90 hits, second with 16 doubles, fourth on the team with 29 RBIs and tops on the team with 31 stolen bases.

Named one of “Arizona’s Heart & Sol” by KOLD and Casino del Sol, Andy Morales was recognized by the AIA as the top high school reporter in 2014, he was awarded the Ray McNally Award in 2017 and a 2019 AZ Education News recognition. He was a youth, high school and college coach for over 30 years. Andy is a Southern Arizona voting member of the Ed Doherty Award, recognizing the top football player in Arizona, and he was named a Local Hero by the Tucson Weekly for 2016. Andy was named an Honorary Flowing Wells Caballero in 2019, became a member of the Sunnyside Los Mezquites Cross Country Hall of Fame in 2021 and he was a member of the Amphi COVID-19 Blue Ribbon Committee.
