The Vamos A Tucson Mexican Baseball Fiesta is back in Tucson for the 12th year at the Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium on from Thursday to Sunday.
The Fiesta, presented by Visit Tucson, AT&T, Vantage West, and Modelo, will include a fireworks show between games of the doubleheader on Friday.
The Arizona Wildcats will be involved with teams from the Liga Arco Mexicana del Pacifico’s (Mexican Winter Baseball League) version of “Spring Training,” including the Naranjeros de Hermosillo, Yaquis de Obregon, Aguilas de Mexicali, and the Mayos de Navojoa.
Some notes on the Naranjeros:
— C Cesar Salazar, formerly of Sahuaro and Arizona who played mostly with the Houston Astros’ Triple-A affiliate Sugar Land (Texas), is listed on the active roster but will not be in Tucson because he is on the Astros’ taxi squad during the postseason.
— 1B Alfonso Rivas, a former Arizona standout who played most of the second half of the season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, will arrive in Tucson on Sunday to join Hermosillo’s bus ride back home to start winter baseball.
— INF Alex Robles (Tucson High grad), RHP Jose Samayoa (Catalina) and Kenneth Sigman (Tucson) are returning players on Hermosillo’s roster.
