Pima advances to Round of 16 in NJCAA Division I tournament with victory over Abraham Baldwin

No. 14 Pima Community College defeated No. 19 Tifton (Ga.) Abraham Baldwin 7-5 on Monday to advance to the Round of 16 of the NJCAA Division I national softball tournament at Oxford, Ala.

The Aztecs (43-12) will play No. 3 Northwest Florida State (55-4) on Tuesday at 11 a.m.

Pima, which has won eight consecutive games after winning 26 straight recently, was led by Talia Martin (Mountain View) and Mina Chacon (Tucson) as part of its nine hits and four walks off two of Abraham Baldwin’s pitchers.

Martin, the leadoff batter, went 2 for 2 with a double, run and three RBIs. Chacon drove in two runs while going 1 for 2 with a run and a walk.

Aubrex Marx (Cienega) had an RBI double and Camila Zepeda (Tucson) finished 2 for 4.

San Manuel graduate Jazmyne Waddell improved to 14-1 by pitching a complete game. She scattered nine hits, allowed four earned runs and two walks and struck out four.

Pima scored in each of the first five innings to build a 7-3 lead.

Chacon had a two-run single in the third inning to put Pima ahead 4-3 after Abraham Baldwin rallied for three runs in the top of that inning.

Marx’s RBI double in the fourth and Martin’s two-run double in the fifth enabled the Aztecs to take a 7-3 lead.

Abraham Baldwin rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh but Waddell was able to turn back the Fillies with a strike out to end the game.
