Willcox hopes to resume play in Little League World Series Thursday following postponements

Willcox ace Hattie Macumber has a 1.64 ERA and has tallied 22 strikeouts through the first two games of the Little League Softball World Series (ESPN)

Willcox’s Little League All-Stars will have waited two full days to play a game due to rain if the competition resumes Thursday in the Little League Softball World Series at Greenville, N.C.

That’s a big “if” because rain is in the forecast again Thursday at Greenville with Tropical Storm Debby hitting the east coast.

A potential doubleheader is in store Thursday in the elimination bracket if Willcox beats Asia-Pacific (Bacolod City, Philippines) in the first game at 8 a.m., Tucson time, on ESPN 2.

A victory would give Willcox a rematch with Mid-Atlantic (Greensburg, Pa.) in the next round at 2 p.m. on ESPN. Willcox opened with a 2-1 victory Sunday over Mid-Atlantic behind Hattie Macumber’s 15 strikeouts that set a LLSWS record in a regulation game (six innings).

Willcox has not played since losing 3-0 to New England (Cranston, R.I.) on Monday in a second-round game of the winners bracket.

Mid-Atlantic bounced back after the loss to Willcox by beating Europe-Africa (Bologna, Italy) 2-1 on Tuesday.

Asia-Pacific is in the elimination bracket after going hitless in five innings in a 10-0 loss to North Carolina (Winterville, N.C.) on Sunday.

Through Willcox’s two games at Greenville, Macumber has struck out 22 and walked three in 11 innings. She has allowed eight hits and three earned runs, giving her a 1.64 ERA. She is also batting .333 with a run, walk and stolen base.

NOTE: Former Arizona players Taylor McQuillin, Allie Skaggs and Alyssa Denham were in Greenville on Wednesday to play with Team McQuillin in one of two Athletes Unlimited games but their game was suspended in the second inning because of the inclement weather. The two AU games will be played at Rosemont, Ill., on Monday.
