Mica Mountain 4-0 ahead of showdown with Casa Grande

The Mica Mountain Thunderbolts welcomed the Sunnyside Blue Devils for a Thursday night battle looking to improve on their perfect season, while the Blue Devils wanted to pull the upset on the road.

The Thunderbolts took the early lead on a Pick-6 by junior Riley Carson, one of two interceptions on the night for him, to help secure a 28-0 victory.

Mica Mountain (4-0) shut out its third straight opponent. The Thunderbolts won at Gilbert Mesquite 48-0 on Sept. 6 and at Sabino 35-0 before playing the Blue Devils (1-3).

“Defensive front is just doing a great job,” said coach Pat Nugent. “They fly to the ball. They make plays.”

The Thunderbolts of the 4A Kino next play at unbeaten 5A Southern power Casa Grande (4-0) on Friday night at 7.

Defense has been dominant for Mica Mountain this season, only allowing eight points through four games.

The Thunderbolts opened the season with a 17-8 victory over San Tan Valley Poston Butte, which scored on a running play in the fourth quarter after Mica Mountain took a 14-0 lead.

In the win over Sunnyside, two touchdown passes from senior Jayden Thoreson to senior Jimmy Leon and a rushing touchdown by senior J.J. Mangrum provided the offensive scoring for the Thunderbolts.

Sunnyside travels to Nogales (0-4) on Friday with that game also starting at 7 p.m.
