Mica Mountain senior Jimmy Leon capped his career with the Thunderbolts in early December, leading the program to its first state title in only its third full season at the varsity level.
Leon, one of 31 seniors on the team, had five receptions for 70 yards as a tight end in the 42-13 win over Arizona College Prep on Dec. 6 at Arizona State’s Mountain America Stadium.
He also had five tackles and broke up a pass as a defensive end.
“We knew the last game of the season would be on the big stage and we knew playing for each other would put us on top,” Leon said.
A week after the game, Leon was announced as one of five finalists for the Ed Doherty Award, presented to the state’s top player. Marana’s Dezmen Roebuck earned the award.
For his accomplishments in December and overall, Leon is the Jet Sports Training Male Athlete of the Month.
Leon, 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, finished as Mica Mountain’s top receiver and leading tackler on the defensive line at the end position.
He caught 32 passes for 463 yards with 14 touchdowns.
He finished with 63 tackles, 23.5 for loss with 16 sacks. He had 55.5 tackles for loss in his career and 38 of them were sacks.
