Pima concludes four-game series with College of Southern Idaho after winning first three games

The Pima Community College baseball team has won its first three games to start the season in its four-game series with the College of Southern Idaho at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field.

The Aztecs will close their series with the Golden Eagles on Sunday at noon.

Sophomore Caden Richards came up clutch as he finished Saturday going 3 for 5 with three RBIs, three runs and two walks. The Aztecs got wins on the mound from freshman Diego Garcia (Salpointe Catholic) and Luis Pablo Navarro (Walden Grove).

Game 1: (23) Pima 5, College of Southern Idaho 3 (7 innings): The Golden Eagles struck first with two runs in the first inning as neither team found further consistent offense until the seventh.

The Golden Eagles added to their lead with one more run to make it 3-0.

Jackson Glueck hit a lead-off double and fellow freshman Matt MacDonald drew a walk to put two runners on. Freshman Zach Plasschaert took a few pitches to put it at a 2-1 count and then drove the fourth pitch to left field for the game-tying home run.

With one out in the seventh, sophomore Andrew Grenert hit a single to reach base. He later got caught stealing second, but freshman Sean Barta drew a walk to put a runner on the basepaths. Richards took over as hit the first pitch he saw and cleared the field for the walk-off homer to win it.

The Aztecs managed two hits and one walk in the first six innings.

Richards finished the game 1 for 2 with two RBIs, a run and a walk. Plasschaert went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run while Glueck was 1 for 3 with a run.

Garcia picked up the win in a relief appearance as he pitched 3 1/3 innings, giving up one run (one earned) on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: (23) Pima 13, College of Southern Idaho 3 (5 innings): MacDonald hit a walk-off RBI single in the fifth inning to secure the run-rule and doubleheader victory.

The Aztecs took the lead in the first inning and never relinquished. Richards picked up right where he left off as he hit an RBI single to drive in freshman Ramon Martinez to put Pima on the scoreboard.

Sophomore Nolan Ganter capped off the inning with a two-run homer to score fellow sophomore Collin Senior as the Aztecs took a 3-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles cut into the lead with two runs in the third inning, but the Aztecs countered with three runs. Senior hit a lead-off double and later scored on a wild pitch. Barta hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Ganter while MacDonald scored to make it 6-2 after Glueck’s RBI single.

The Aztecs got another boost from Barta in the fourth inning as he hit a two-run home run to score Ganter and make it 9-3.

Ganter and MacDonald had RBI doubles as part of a four-run inning to make it 10-3.

Ganter finished the game 2 for 2 with three RBIs, four runs and two walks while Barta went 2 for 3 with four RBIs and two runs. MacDonald went 2 for 2 with an RBI, two runs and two walks and Richards was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Glueck finished 2 for 2 with two RBIs.

Navarro got the start and pitched three innings, giving up two runs (two earned) on three hits with six strikeouts and four walks on 78 pitches.
