
Sunnyside and Salpointe, two of Southern Arizona’s traditionally strong boys soccer programs, may face each other if both win their first-round matchup of the first Open State Championship boys soccer tournament.
Sunnyside (19-3) is seeded No. 9 while Salpointe (21-1) is No. 8.
Sunnyside will host No. 24 Gilbert (10-6-2) and No. 25 Tolleson Union (12-5-1) will play at Salpointe on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Salpointe defeated Sunnyside 2-0 in the championship match of the Brandon Bean Soccer Tournament on Dec. 6 at the Kino Sports Complex.
Teams that win in the first two rounds of the Open State Championship remain in the tournament.
If a team loses in the first two rounds, it will be placed in its conference tournament. Sunnyside is in the 6A while Salpointe is in the 4A.
