Former Texas Tech associate head coach filling same role at Arizona

Arizona’s new coach Becky Burke has officially added veteran assistant Ashley Odom as the program’s associate head coach, the same role she had at Texas Tech this season.

“Ashley brings a tremendous resume of coaching experience to our staff. Her time spent in the Big 12 is going to be extremely valuable to us,” Burke said in a press release. “Ashley is a great basketball coach, elite recruiter, and even better person. I couldn’t be more excited for our young women to be around her everyday.”

Odom joins the Wildcats after five seasons at Texas Tech, where she was elevated to associate head coach for the 2024-25 season. During her time in Lubbock, she was instrumental in developing talent, building strong recruiting pipelines, and guiding the Lady Raiders to consecutive winning seasons.

Odom helped guide Texas Tech to a 19-18 record while helping lead juniors Bailey Maupin and Jasmine Shavers to back-to-back All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selections. She also played a central role in signing a top-tier recruiting class that included four-star talent Kalysta Martin and six impact transfers.

Odom’s influence with Texas Tech’s 2023-24 season included a win over No. 24 Iowa State and a dominant run in the Big 12 tournament. Maupin and Shavers, both of whom she directly coached, were also named to the Dave Campbell’s All-Texas Women’s Basketball Awards and the CSC Academic All-District Team.

Prior to her time at Texas Tech, Odom spent seven years with Krista Gerlich at UT Arlington, helping the Lady Mavs to a historic run that included a Sun Belt regular season championship and WNIT appearance in 2018-19. Her efforts earned her Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Division I Assistant Coach of the Year honors in 2017.

Her coaching journey also includes impactful stints at Lamar, where she helped develop multiple all-conference selections and led the program to an NCAA tournament appearance. She also had a standout playing career at Lamar University.

A native of Mesquite, Texas, Odom holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in kinesiology, finishing graduate school with a perfect 4.0 GPA. She and her husband Derrick are the proud parents of daughter Aariel.

Odom coached at Texas Tech recently-signed 6-foot-7 transfer Achol Magot of Tucson.

She joins Julie BraseHairgrove and James Ewing on Burke’s first coaching staff at Arizona. Tennessee great Michelle Marciniak is the program’s first general manager. She reportedly will also assist with coaching in general.
